Wear
Removable appliances must be worn exactly as instructed. Be sure they are pushed firmly against your teeth and gums as you have been shown. There may be a short period (one to three days) when you may experience some soreness of the gums and teeth, some difficulty speaking and excessive salivation. If you develop any sore spots on your gums or your appliance does not fit please call the office right away.
Cleaning your retainer
Cleaning is best accomplished by scrubbing both sides of the appliance with a soft bristled toothbrush with lukewarm water and mild soap. It must then be thoroughly rinsed with water.
In addition to brushing, it may also be soaked in a retainer or denture cleaning solution such as Polident or Efferdent.
Breakage
We have found from experience that retainers do not break or get lost when they are worn properly or stored in their case.
DO NOT
- Wear appliances while eating, brushing, or engaging in athletic activities.
- Wrap the appliance in tissue, napkin, or paper towels because it may be accidentally thrown away
- Place the appliance in your pocket as you may sit on it and break it or lose it through the laundry.
- Leave the appliance out where your pet can reach it because they will chew it and destroy it.
REMEMBER
Always bring your retainer in when you come see us so we can make sure the fit is still perfect.
Retainers are night time for a lifetime!
